The best way to do it is to apply Polysporin on a regular basis to the nostrils. It helps to soften those blood clots, and then you can gently clean them with a softened Q-tip. Again, you have to be very careful not to poke around too much inside the nose, and most patients are pretty reasonable about just removing a small amount of clot or crust if they need to.
