Will I Have to Remove My Artificial Nails for My Rhinoplasty Surgery

Good news for lovers of beautiful gel or acrylic nails and painted colors.  In the old days, the medical staff in the OR would use the color of your nail beds as an indicator of your oxygen levels. Today more modern ways of checking for this exists, meaning your nails can stay. However, the nurses will often prefer that you come to surgery with no polish and no acrylic/gel.

So what to do? Here are your nail and nail polish guidelines:

  • In general, it is best to come to your surgery without nail polish and artificial nails (fingers and toes) – so if you don’t have them now, don’t go get them the day before your surgery
  • If you already have painted or artificial nails, then you can keep them – your oxygen levels will be gauged in a different way – the nurses will understand…after all, they know as well as you do that removing them can be an annoyance
Please note – every surgery center has different requirements when it comes to artificial nails and nail polish. Please check the pre and post operative instructions that were provided by your surgeon’s patient care manager. These guidelines apply to Dr. Buonassisi’s patients.
