In this insightful discussion, Dr. Thomas Buonassisi, MD, FRCSC, a Specialist in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery with a practice limited to facial plastic surgeries, delves into the nuances of rhinoplasty computer imaging versus self-photoshopping. With over 20 years of experience and having performed over 2,500 rhinoplasties, Dr. Buonassisi is well-equipped to guide patients through the complexities of rhinoplasty planning. The video highlights the critical differences between professional computer imaging conducted by a surgeon and self-photoshopping, emphasizing the importance of realistic expectations in achieving satisfactory surgical outcomes.

Dr. Buonassisi explains that while self-photoshopping can be a useful tool for patients to express their aesthetic goals, it often leads to unrealistic expectations. Patients may alter their nose in ways that are not surgically feasible, resulting in images that do not reflect a natural appearance. On the other hand, computer imaging performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr. Buonassisi is grounded in what is surgically possible. This process involves the surgeon making changes that can realistically be achieved through surgery, thus providing a more accurate representation of potential outcomes.

The video underscores the importance of having a surgeon conduct the computer imaging process. Dr. Buonassisi stresses that this approach allows for a detailed discussion about the surgical maneuvers required to achieve the desired changes, ensuring that patients have a clear understanding of what is achievable. This collaborative process helps align the patient's aesthetic goals with realistic surgical possibilities, ultimately leading to greater satisfaction with the results.

Dr. Buonassisi also acknowledges the value of patients bringing in photos they have altered or images of others they admire. These serve as a starting point for discussions about aesthetic preferences, although they are not used as definitive guides for surgery. Instead, the focus remains on the computer images created in the office, which reflect the likely results of the procedure.

What is the main difference between computer imaging and self-photoshopping for rhinoplasty? The main difference is that computer imaging is conducted by a surgeon who understands the surgical possibilities, ensuring that the changes reflect what can realistically be achieved through surgery.

Why is it important for a surgeon to perform the computer imaging? A surgeon's involvement ensures that the imaging is based on surgical reality, allowing for an honest discussion about what can be achieved and helping to set realistic expectations.

Can self-photoshopping be useful for rhinoplasty planning? Yes, it can help express a patient's aesthetic goals, but it often results in unrealistic images that may not be surgically feasible.

How does Dr. Buonassisi use patient-altered photos in consultations? He uses them to understand a patient's aesthetic preferences but relies on professional computer imaging to guide surgical planning.

What should patients expect from computer imaging during a rhinoplasty consultation? Patients should expect a realistic preview of potential surgical outcomes, grounded in what is surgically achievable.

Why might self-photoshopped images appear unnatural? Patients may alter features beyond what is surgically possible, leading to images that do not reflect a natural appearance.

How does computer imaging benefit the surgeon-patient relationship? It facilitates clear communication about achievable results, aligning patient expectations with surgical possibilities.

What is Dr. Buonassisi's approach to rhinoplasty consultations? He emphasizes education and realistic imaging, ensuring patients understand the likely outcomes of their surgery.

This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. My name is Doctor. Bonesisi and I'm a board certified facial plastic surgeon with a practice in Vancouver, Canada. I've been specializing in cosmetic rhinoplasty for almost twenty years and I'm here to answer your questions about this very interesting procedure. Happy patients are educated patients, and that's why every question is a good one. So how is computer imaging different than you photoshopping your nose? The big difference is that I'm doing it. And when you're photoshopping your nose, might have some ideas about what you think looks good if you were a painter, but when I'm doing the computer imaging, I'm making changes to the nose that are possible with surgery, and I think that's the big difference. There are things that you can do with a computer program that you just can't do with surgery, and I don't think there's a real point in me showing you something that I can't actually achieve with surgery. So this is why I think it's very important with your computer imaging that your surgeon does the computer imaging with you, explains what surgical maneuvers will result in the visual changes that they're describing, and gives you an honest opinion about, the certainty, that you're gonna achieve those results. So that doesn't mean that you shouldn't Photoshop your nose. It's perfectly fine. It gives me lots of information about what you think is good aesthetic result. I can tell you though that from years of doing this that often patients will show me their computer imaged photos and they often don't look particularly natural. They've done things that are outside of what's possible surgically. Sometimes they'll change one feature so much that it doesn't look like a natural nose anymore. And so I I although I I I'm happy to look at photos that people have imaged or I'm even happy to look at photos of other people that they bring in and show me, but it's really just for me to get a sense for what their aesthetic goals are in general. I don't, I certainly don't work off of those photos and I think that I encourage people to have a look at the computer image photos that we do in the office as the likely result of surgery. Thanks for listening, and check back regularly for new questions and my honest answers about rhinoplasty.
