Naso Labial Grooves

|

The nasolabial folds are identified as the lines that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth and are commonly referred to as "laugh lines". They help make the cheek and upper lip distinctive by separating the two. Over time as we age we start to naturally lose volume in our cheeks causing the cheek to slide and the fold to become more pronounced.

What Causes Deepened Nasolabial Folds?

One of the most common causes of deepened nasolabial grooves is sun damage. The majority of damage happens when we are young and tend to ignore the damage that is happening to our skin from sun exposure. UV rays contribute to the breakdown of collagen which gives the skin it's smooth appearance. Another common cause is smoking. People naturally purse their lips when smoking which can lead to wrinkles all around the mouth area, combined with the fact that chemicals in tobacco accelerates the aging process by as much as 20 percent. Finally, facial volume loss happens to just about everyone as we age. Our cheeks lose volume which cause them to fall, deepening the appearance of the nasolabial grooves.
