Computer Imaging: An Essential Communication Tool
This simulation on a model shows the power of communication the potential outcome of cosmetic surgery with computer imaging. While the simulation does not predict your result, is does allow you and your surgeon to evaluate different levels of change.
Computer imaging plays an invaluable role in helping patients understand what can be achieved with cosmetic surgery. Computer imaging is a valuable communication tool, as you and your surgeon will have the opportunity to review several degrees of change and discuss the pros and cons of different options. Computer imaging improves the quality of the cosmetic consultation and helps the surgeon and the patient settle on a surgical plan.
How Computer Imaging Works
During your consultation, your surgeon will take several photographs with a digital camera. These photos are uploaded and displayed on a computer screen. Your surgeon will use specially designed imaging software to demonstrate how various changes will affect your overall shape and balance. Computer imaging is especially helpful for individuals who are considering multiple facial surgeries, such as a patient considering nose surgery and chin augmentation or both a brow lift and eyelid surgery. Some procedures cannot be reliably visualized with imaging software. If this is the case with your procedure, your surgeon will let you know of this limitation.
Computer Imaging Software Is Effective for Visualizing the Following Surgeries:
- Rhinoplasty
- Chin implant
- Necklift
- Otoplasty
- Browlift
- Lower blepharoplasty
- Neck liposuction
- Body liposuction
Computer Imaging Software Is Less Effective for Visualizing the Following Surgeries:
- Double eyelid surgery
- Upper blepharoplasty
- Facelift
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift
- Breast reduction
There are some limitations to computer imaging. Computer imaging will not show exactly what will be achieved after surgery, given that there are many variables that can affect your final results, including how you heal. However, computer imaging is an excellent tool for evaluating options and giving an approximation of what type of outcome can realistically be expected. Computer imaging is not a promise of what your surgery will achieve, but should be considered a communication tool for exploring different options.
