Telangiectasia is a condition in which widened tiny blood vessels cause threadlike red lines or patterns on the skin. These patterns form gradually and are commonly seen in clusters. They are known as “spider veins” because of their fine, weblike appearance. More common in women than men, spider veins are often found on the legs and become more prevalent with age. They are also common in areas that are easily seen (such as the lips, nose, eyes, fingers, and cheeks). They can cause discomfort, and some people find them to be unsightly and wish to have them removed.
What to Expect from Sclerotherapy Injections
Your sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a proven procedure that has been in use for many years. It is important to have your treatment performed by a vein specialist with vast experience with this procedure.While your recovery will be short and you can continue life as usual, you should take it easy for a few days and wear compression garments for approximately a week. Complete pre and post treatment instructions will be provided.
What About Larger Throbbing Veins or Varicose Veins?
Larger veins that throb or are painful are not usually treated with sclerotherapy injections. Varicose veins may be a sign of an underlying health problem, so it is important to see your doctor to determine the cause, before seeking treatment. If you have throbbing veins or varicose veins, please see your family doctor or health practitioner to be evaluated.
