Is Open Rhinoplasty or Closed Rhinoplasty Better?

Is Open Rhinoplasty or Closed Rhinoplasty Better?

Open vs. closed? This is one of the most common questions that Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Buonassisi receives from his Vancouver rhinoplasty patients. Understandably, they are concerned about incisions and healing time. It is a good idea to be educated and understand the difference between the two techniques. He discusses the pros and cons of each approach with patients during their consultation and recommend the approach that is best for them depending on the kinds of changes they would like to make.In general, the open technique allows for more accurate and substantial modification of the nasal tip. The open technique may also cause less disruption to the normal nasal tip support mechanisms when a hump reduction is required. Keeping the nasal tip support mechanisms intact is important as this helps to ensure that the tip remains in the same position years after surgery. The closed approach may be appropriate when changes are to be made to the bridge but not the tip of the nose (or very small changes are planned for the tip). Can a patient request the closed approach? They sure can. But they need to be aware of the possibility that their final result may be less ideal than if the open approach were used.
