Dr. Buonassisi is a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist with 20 years experience performing this procedure. In this video he answers a common question, "Do I have any health concerns that would me it unsafe for me to have rhinoplasty?". Most patients considering rhinoplasty surgery are young - at Dr. Buonassisi's practice, the majority of them are under the age of 25 with the typical age range from 18 - 50. Generally speaking, younger people don't tend to have medical concerns that would make it unsafe for them to have surgery. It is important that you disclose all your medications and medical conditions to Dr. Buonassisi during your consultation so that he can determine if it is safe for you to have surgery. Here are the medical conditions that might be of concern - if you are thinking about having surgery and want some information prior to booking your consultation, please don't hesitate to contact our office.

Untreated Severe Anemia

Mild anemia is relatively common, easily detected and is easily treated with iron supplements. It is quite uncommon for patients to have anemia that is severe enough to reschedule their surgery. If you have a history of anemia or think you may have low iron, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Buonassisi during your consultation. You may be required to have a hemoglobin test prior to surgery. If your iron levels are low, an iron supplement may be suggested.

Bleeding Disorders

If you have a serious bleeding disorder, you know about it by now. Some bleeding disorders can be managed in the pre operative period, while some are serious enough that elective surgery just isn't a good idea. The most important thing is that you let Dr. Buonassisi know if you aren't sure.

Heart Conditions

Some heart conditions such as arrhythmia do not pose a problem for surgery. Other more serious conditions may make surgery a bad idea. Please discuss any heart conditions with Dr. Buonassisi.

An Illness that Requires Blood Thinners

It is pretty uncommon for the typical young rhinoplasty patient to have an illness that requires blood thinners. Patients taking blood thinners will need to consult with their prescribing physician to get approval to temporarily stop their medication for surgery. Be sure to discuss blood thinners with Dr. Buonassisi.
