Botox Q&A: Am I Too Young for Botox?

From time-to-time, we see special cases that are outside of the usual range of patients at 8 West. While we are sometimes able to answer questions that come through over the phone or by email, usually it's necessary to assess the patients individuality before providing a complete answer. If you are amongst those wondering about injectables, here's whether you can assess if you are too young for botox.

Am I Too Young to Get Botox?

There is no universal answer to this question, since botox is a medicine used to treat very specific problems, of which have a vast range amongst different patients. If you are in your late teens or early twenties, this is generally very young to start getting botox, since botox is ideally used for lines that remain after constant muscle movement. Before this age, most patients are very unlikely to have residual lines after movement. While some patients may start seeing lines around their eyes prior to their twenties, botox is not ideal for treating lines underneath the eyes.

What If I Am an Exception?

Some patients may have specific occurrences or problems that present themselves a lot earlier on than most, and this may warrant the use of botox a lot earlier than would usually be considered appropriate. The best way to determine this is to see a reputable plastic surgeon or injector to determine if you are an exception to the rule.

Isn't Botox a Preventative Measure, Too?

Yes, botox is often used as a preventative measure to avoid deepening pre-existing lines. However, in order to use botox as a preventative measure, you must have existing lines that remain after muscle movement. This is where the botox will be injected, smoothing out the area, and preventing that wrinkle from becoming more pronounced from further muscle-movement.

How Does It Work?

Facial wrinkles form because of various factors, one culprit being repetitive facial expressions and muscle movement. When Botox is injected, the muscles in that area become paralyzed, which prevents the patient from making the expressions that caused the wrinkles in the first place. The general rule of thumb for age and botox? Most plastic surgeons and injectors will suggest waiting to get botox until you are at least 25, but in order to determine whether you are an exception to this rule, we recommend you have a personalized consultation with an expert.
