Cosmetic Complications: Hump Recurrence After Surgery

Recurrence of a a dorsal hump after surgery can be an unexpected cosmetic complication of rhinoplasty. In 5 – 10% of patients who have had hump reduction, swelling and scar tissue formation can cause the hump to partially reform. The reformation is usually minor compared to the original hump, and some patients won’t be concerned by it. Patients who find it noticable may request revision surgery to improve it.

Can your surgeon control hump recurrence?

Recurrence of the hump is out of the surgeon’s control – meaning there isn’t anything that can be done during the surgery to help prevent it. What is most important is that your surgeon discuss the possibility of this with you so that it is not a surprise if it happens and can make an informed decision about having surgery. Be sure you understand your surgeon’s revision surgery policy.

Other possible cosmetic complications of rhinoplasty

  • slight descent of nasal tip position
  • slight twisting of the nose
  • minor visible irregularities
  • under or over correction

Consultation with a Specialist is Key

Patients who consult with a rhinoplasty specialist are typically very happy with the results of their surgery. Consultations should include a rhinoplasty assessment, computer imaging, a review of before and after photos of patients who have had similar changes to yours, and a discussion of the risks and benefits of surgery.
