All About Eyelid and Brow Lift Surgery in Vancouver

The eyes are often the first part of the face that people look at when engaging you, it also just happens to be one of the first parts of the face to show the signs of aging. Aging eyelid skin and sagging brows can make people look older than their true age, less energetic than they feel inside, or even portray a grumpy or antagonistic appearance.

Apart from age, other factors such as genetics or injury may mean that you just want to reshape your eyes or brow area to create a more aesthetically comfortable appearance.

We all want to look our best at work or when socializing, and more importantly, our appearance plays a significant role in our self-confidence. Matching how you look on the outside with how you feel inside can be a game-changer for those of us who want to step out into the world with an extra spring in our step. This can come with the confidence in knowing that you look like the most radiant and vibrant version of yourself.

To achieve these results, an eyelid or brow lift may be the right option for you, particularly if you’re eager to rejuvenate and refresh the upper third of your face. An eyelid or brow lift can leave you looking and feeling more youthful, awake, and refreshed.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, lifts the upper and/or lower eyelids. This procedure tightens and lifts sagging eyelid skin and can reduce under-eye bags and puffiness. There are several types of eyelid surgeries that Dr. Buonassisi specializes in:

  • Upper eyelid lift is optimal for when the skin on your upper eyelid is puffy, drooping, or is obscuring your eye.
  • External lower eyelid lift is used to remove excess and aged skin on the lower eyelid.
  • Internal lower eyelid lift removes fat from the lower eyelid, which is usually what shows as a puffy under eye.
  • Double eyelid is where a fine incision in the upper eyelid skin is made, removing excess skin and fat, if necessary. The incision is then hidden in the creation of a new eyelid crease, so that it is virtually imperceptible once healed.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift repositions brows to a natural, attractive-looking position, smoothes forehead wrinkles, and shapes the brow arch. Dr. Buonassisi is highly skilled in performing several types of brow lifts:

  • Endoscopic brow lift is where the incision in the scalp and hidden within the hair, so that the scar is unnoticeable. This procedure then lifts the whole mid-section of the face, raising the brows and even cheeks.
  • Temporal brow lift is best for those whose medial (bid) brow is in a good position and the lateral (outer third) brow is flat or downward-sloping. The procedure places incisions in the hairline above the lateral brow, and then lifts these corners of the brow.
  • Direct incision brow lift is usually for patients who have excess or sagging skin, causing a heavy brow. Incisions are placed in the natural wrinkles or creases directly above the brow to remove excess skin and lift the brow.

Who is Eyelid or Brow Lift Surgery For?

There are many reasons why people choose eyelid and brow surgery. “What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?” and, “Is a brow lift right for me?” are common questions from patients who are considering these procedures. Patients who are excellent candidates for these procedures have these concerns as they age or as a result of hereditary factors:

  • Naturally low-set brows or brows that have descended over time
  • Deep wrinkles and brow furrows due to age
  • Droopy or hooded eyelids
  • Sagging eyelid skin
  • Tired, puffy eyes and under-eye bags
  • People wanting a double eyelid crease

What to Expect with Eyelid and Brow Lifts

Brow lift surgery takes from 1 to 2 hours and the procedure is performed under general anesthesia so you’ll be fully asleep. Most patients take at least a week off work to recover from their brow lift. Stitches are removed about a week after surgery. You’ll need to take 3 to 4 weeks off of vigorous exercise and activities to allow for proper healing and to minimize swelling. You’ll see a significant change right after your surgery, but it takes the brows a couple of weeks for the brows to settle into a natural position. How long does a brow lift last? A brow lift lasts for years, even up to a decade, but over time, the skin will sag as you age.

An eyelid lift typically takes around 1 hour and is performed under local anesthesia. You’ll want to take about a week off before you’re back to work and about 2 weeks off from strenuous activities and exercise. Most patients are comfortable being back in the public eye after a couple of weeks, but full recovery takes several months. There are no visible scars from the incisions. How long do eyelid lifts last? You can expect to enjoy your results for at least 10 to 15 years, but as you age, your skin will begin to naturally droop over time.
