Saline or Silicone? Tear Drop or Round?

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Watts will help you decide what type of implant and placement will achieve the appropriate results for you.

Important Considerations for Breast Implant Surgery

Breast implants are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the world. The popularity of this cosmetic surgery is easily understood: breast implants can create a larger, more shapely appearance to the breasts which complements the overall physique. Clothes fit better, the body looks more appropriately proportioned with the waist appearing to be in contrast smaller than the hips and chest, and self-confidence is boosted. Breast implants also play a role in helping women regain a more youthful and sleek shape following pregnancy and weight fluctuations.

While the idea of breast implants is exciting, it is important to evaluate the potential risks and complications carefully to decide if this surgery is right for you. Ideal candidates for any cosmetic surgery procedure should have a set of realistic expectations, and the desire to become informed about both the risks and benefits of surgery. Here are some of the important considerations of breast implants.

Finding the Right Fit is a free eBook which summarizes important information related to choosing your breast implants, including implant and incision placement, implant filler and size and projection.

1. Saline or Silicone

  • Health Canada has approved silicone-filled breast implants
  • These cohesive implants, commonly known as “Gummy Bear” implants, are preferred by some women as they have a more natural feel
  • The new cohesive silicone implants have a unique feature: if in the rare event that the implant ruptures, the silicone gel is specially designed to remain within the breast capsule
  • Silicone implants come in a range of sizes, textures and profiles to ensure the right fit
  • Saline implants come in a range of sizes and are filled with a saline solution once the shell is placed in the body – deciding on the type of implant filler, saline or silicone is an important part of your consultation process
  • 2. Implant Width, Height, Cohesiveness & Projection

ImplantProjection_410-e1274384403687.jpgOnce you have selected either saline or silicone, it is time to consider the width, height and projection of the implant. Highly cohesive implants are shaped like a tear drop, which can create a very natural looking breast shape. These implants are also more expensive than other silicone gel filled implants.

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Watts will measure your chest wall and current breast width and recommend some appropriate options for you. Breast implant width is the the measurement of the diameter. If the implant is a round shape, the height is the same as the width.

If you have opted for natural tear-drop shaped highly cohesive implants, then the height is the measurement from the bottom of the implant to the top. Projection refers to the “profile” of the implant, or how far away it extends from your chest. You can choose from a low, moderate or high profile.

    3. Implant Texture

The outer shell of the implants is made of either a smooth or textured surface. While not yet proven through research, it may be possible that textured implants are associated with a lower risk of capsular contracture. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Watts will review these considerations with you during your consult and answer any questions you may have.

    4. Implant and Incision Placement

IncisionLocations-e1274384421481.jpgBreast implants can be inserted in to the body through different incision sites, each with their own associated risks and benefits.

In addition to incision placement, you will decide if the implant should be placed above or below the muscle.   Dr. Watts will help you decide on the best combination of incision and implant placement.

    5. Breast Feeding and Changes to Nipple Sensation

Breast implant surgery may affect your ability to breast feed – please discuss this consideration in your surgical consult with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Robyn Watts

    6. Implant Replacement and Cancer Screening

    • Breast implants are not a lifetime device – it is common to required secondary breast procedures to either remove or replace your implants
    • Routine screening for breast cancer will be more difficult – the implant itself may interfere with mammogram screening, making cancer harder to detect
    • If you are the proper age for mammogram screening, it is important to continue having regular tests – the test itself squeezes the implants and in rare cases may cause them to rupture
